Jonas faces the first of three trials, each designed to test his worthiness to fulfill the Prophecy. Will he overcome this first challenge and take one step closer to his destiny?
The first thing Jonas felt was the frigid stone beneath his spine. He opened his eyes to a ceiling of polished obsidian, reflecting a distorted, upside-down version of himself. As he attempted to shift, the harsh bite of hempen rope snapped taut. His wrists and ankles were splayed wide, bound with nautical precision to the four corners of a massive, monolithic altar.
The temple was a skeletal masterpiece of ribbed basalt. Great pillars of weeping stone supported a vaulted roof, while the open canyon beyond breathed a sulfurous wind through the sanctuary, carrying with it the distant howl of something unseen.
The floor was a mirror of polished hematite, so dark and motionless that Jonas felt as though he were suspended above a frozen lake of oil, his bound form the only island in an endless sea of oppressive black.
Around the perimeter stood towering statues of forgotten deities, their silent forms looming over the sanctuary in judgment. Eons of wind had eroded their faces into smooth, featureless masks of granite, leaving their identities lost to time.
But most ominous of all were the obsidian birds, soaring overhead in a tightening spiral of shadow. Their gaunt, malformed bodies seemed forged from equal parts living darkness and flowing ink, their silhouettes twisting unnaturally as they circled above the demigod. They moved with eerie precision, their black wings cutting through the air like fragments of night given form.
Jonas lunged against the restraints, his muscles drawing taut like bowstrings. Each violent heave of his body revealed the sheer strength of his battle-hardened frame, his broad shoulders tapering into a lean, corded waist. Sweat glistened across his skin, catching the dim light of the basalt temple as he strained against his bonds.
As he arched his back, the hemp bit deep into his wrists, but the movement served only to accentuate the raw power of his thighs. Because he was splayed wide, his masculinity was put on full display, an unapologetic center of gravity for the room. His shaft stood proud, a thick, pulsing pillar that refused to be cowed by the cold stone beneath him. His testicles, heavy with divine seed, hung in a perfect, weighted symmetry, their velvet skin shimmering with a healthy, youthful glow.
He stopped fighting for a moment, his chest heaving, the rise and fall of his pectorals echoing the frantic beat of his heart. The silence of the temple was absolute, save for the wet sound of his own breathing.
Then Jonas heard the sound of bare heels striking stone. From the depths of the basalt shadows, the ivory woman emerged, gliding into the dim light of the sanctuary. She was a vision of porcelain cruelty, her skin so unnervingly pale it seemed to emit its own ghostly luminescence against the dark, ribbed walls of the temple. Her dark eyes, void of warmth, scanned Jonas’s splayed form.
She didn't speak at first. Instead, she circled the altar, her gaze lingering on the Norse demigod's impressive manhood. A slow, knowing smile curved her lips, one that promised a thousand different kinds of agony.
"Welcome to the Temple of the Hollow Gods, Prince of the North," she purred, her voice a velvety caress that sent a shiver of ice down Jonas’s spine. She stepped closer, the scent of ozone and ancient dust clinging to her. "You have traveled far, fought hard, and bled much to be where you are now."
She paused at the foot of the altar, studying him with a faint, knowing smile. “Tell me, little prince,” she said, her gaze rising to meet his defiant eyes. “Why do you seek Yuexian with such desperate determination?”
“I seek her wisdom, and the prophecy that awaits me,” jonas rasped, his voice echoing through the ribbed basalt. “My father, Jotun, rules the North with an iron grip. His reign has brought suffering to my people, and it cannot continue. Yuexian can reveal the path I must take to defeat him.”
The woman let out a soft, melodic laugh that chilled the air.
"Prophecy?" The woman let out a breathy laugh, her fingers tracing the cold edge of the basalt altar. "Yuexian was abducted many years ago, snatched by monstrosities in the sky."
A slow, knowing smile tugged at the corners of Jonas's mouth. He looked up at her, his azure eyes dancing with a sudden, sharp clarity.
"A touching performance," Jonas said, his voice dropping into a smug, low rumble. He stopped struggling against the ropes, instead relaxing into the altar with a calculated ease. "The abduction, the tragic disappearance, the long years of silence... it’s a classic tale. Almost poetic."
The woman’s smile didn't falter, but her eyes narrowed.
“The stories say Yuexian is a seer of unmatched insight,” Jonas continued, his gaze sweeping over her porcelain features. “They also say she is a master of illusion, a weaver of masks who conceals her true nature in plain sight. But you made one mistake. You forgot that I was raised by Jotun. I was taught to look beyond the surface, to see what others would rather keep hidden.”
He shifted against his restraints, the ropes creaking beneath the strain of his muscles. His eyes locked onto hers, his expression carrying an almost infuriating confidence.
“The ‘abducted’ seer never met her end,” he continued. “She simply stepped into the shadows of her own temple.” A faint, knowing smile crossed his face. “You are not the guardian of the seer, my dear. You are Yuexian.”
He glanced toward the obsidian birds circling above them.
“The theatrics, the shadow birds, the attempt to break my resolve, even your grand performance is all a test. You wanted to see whether I would falter. But I have come too far to turn back."
Jonas leaned against the ropes, utterly unshaken.
The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the distant whistle of the sulfurous wind. The woman’s expression, the mask of the cruel jailer, slid away to reveal something far more ancient and dangerous. The smugness in Jonas's voice had struck a chord, turning the dynamic of the room on its head. He was still bound, splayed open and vulnerable, yet he remained unbroken and unbowed.
A laugh erupted from the woman. It was not the mocking chime of a jailer, but a deep, resonant peal of genuine amusement. She stepped back, her posture regal.
"Most 'heroes' come here with their chests puffed out, babbling nonstop about their destiny,'" Yuexian said, her voice now layered with a haunting, melodic authority. "They are bumbling idiots, blinded by the glitter of their own imagined legends, waiting for a prophecy to be handed to them. They mistake my cruelty for malice and they break when I test their fortitude."
She began to pace the perimeter of the altar, her ivory skin contrasting sharply with the obsidian floor. "I foresaw your coming years ago and I have been waiting. I will admit, I had my doubts. When you first entered the canyon, you smelled of unearned confidence and naiveté. I wondered if you were simply another one of those fools. But now I see there is more to the son of Jotun."
Yuexian ceased her pacing, her dark gaze settling upon Jonas with amusement. “Three chambers from here, at the heart of this temple, lies my scrying pool. It is the place where I gaze beyond the veil and into the future. You will face three trials, one within each chamber. Pass them, and you shall receive the knowledge you seek.”
Her lips curled into a wicked smile.
“But fail and you will leave this temple, less than a man.”
"A fair price for a king's knowledge," Jonas replied, his voice steady despite the lingering tremors in his thighs. "I accept."
Yuexian raised a pale hand and traced a jagged, invisible sigil in the air. A sudden, violent snap of azure electricity surged through the hempen ropes, incinerating them instantly. The sudden release of tension sent a jolt through Jonas's frame, and he sat up with a sharp exhale before hoisting himself off the altar.
He stood slowly, feeling the heavy, grounding sway of his restored anatomy. He didn't bother to cover himself; in this place of hollow gods and obsidian mirrors, modesty felt like a weakness. He stepped off the altar, his bare feet slapping against the hematite floor.
Yuexian glided toward the archway of the first chamber, Jonas following closely behind. Above him, the shadow birds spiraled through the air in tightening circles, their gaunt silhouettes resembling vultures patiently awaiting the death of their prey before descending upon the remains.
Jonas paid them no heed.
His gaze remained fixed upon the chamber ahead.
As they crossed the threshold, the world vanished. There was no floor, no ceiling, only a thick, sensory-depriving blackness that felt like being submerged in a lake of ink. Absolute, suffocating darkness.
“You will face three trials, Prince Jonas,”
Yuexian’s bodiless voice echoed around him.
“The first will test your ambition, the second your strength and fortitude, and the third your knowledge. Within each, you will encounter trials of memory, scenarios, and illusions. But survival alone will not suffice. To pass, you must prove yourself worthy of the destiny that awaits you.”
"I am ready," Jonas declared, his voice cutting through the oppressive void.
The inky darkness began to churn, swirling like oil in water, drawing the shadows inward to forge solid shapes. The void gave way to a sudden, blinding clarity as a horizon materialized, revealing a vast, circular arena carved from pale limestone, full of rowdy, bloodthirsty spectators. The stagnant air of the temple transformed to a wide array of scents and sensations: the copper of fresh blood, the fragrance of giant pine trees, and the bitter wind of the North.
This was his ancestral homeland.
And standing across from him was Amund.
Amund stood as a towering monument of genetic perfection. He possessed the same striking azure eyes as Jonas and a mane of thick, chestnut-brown wavy hair. But where Jonas was lean and corded, Amund resembled more of their father, a fortress of meat and bone. His chest was a sweeping expanse of armored muscle, his abdominals carved into deep, symmetrical ridges that led the eye downward to the center of his pride.
He stood completely naked, unashamed and exposed in the pale limestone light. His shaft was a heavy, slumbering pillar of almond-colored flesh, thick-veined and imposing even in its stillness. Below, his testicles hung in a massive, weighted sac, two spheres of concentrated power that swayed with the bitter wind of the North. They were engorged, laden with enough seed to fertilize a brothel of maidens.
"It looks like it has come to this, little brother," Amund said, his voice a rich, resonant bass that vibrated in Jonas's own chest, his massive frame casting a shadow that seemed to swallow the limestone beneath him.
Jonas remained frozen for a heartbeat, his mind racing to reconcile the image before him. He knew the architecture of this nightmare, the limestone circle, the blood-hungry roar of the crowd. It was the Crucible of the North. Here the strongest were forged in violence, the fights often leading to the death of a combatant.
But the man standing before him was not the monster the arena demanded.
Amund, despite his fortress-like frame and imposing presence, had always been the gentlest soul in Jonas’s world. He was the brother who defended the weak, fed the hungry, and gave freely to those who had nothing. Where Jotun ruled through fear and strength, Amund embodied the leader his father should have been.
To see that gentle giant stripped of everything familiar and placed before him as an adversary felt less like a trial and more like a cruel joke written by the Fates themselves.
The dissonance of the moment was shattered by a sound that didn't just echo, but vibrated through the very marrow of Jonas’s bones.
"Behold the inheritors of my blood!" the voice boomed, a tectonic rumble that silenced the cheering masses instantly.
The sound rattled the limestone beneath Jonas's feet and sent a shudder through the spectators. From the shadows of the sidelines, Jotun emerged, descending from a throne carved from the bleached ribs of a leviathan. He was a mountain of a man, his presence an eclipse that dimmed the midday sun. His eyes, colder than the gales of the North, gazed upon his two sons.
He stood atop the dais, his massive chest heaving, arms spread wide to embrace the carnage he was about to orchestrate. "Though you are both my sons, only one can carry the weight of the crown. Today, the North shall witness a reckoning. You will fight not for gold, nor for land, but for the singular honor of facing me."
Jotun's gaze dropped to the groin of his sons as a cruel grin formed on his face. "The law of the Crucible is absolute. To prove your dominance, nothing less than the total castration of your brother will suffice. Only the one who holds the other's seed in his hand may claim the right to challenge the Father.”
Jonas turned his gaze back to Amund. In the eyes of the crowd, they were merely two combatants in a blood-sport, but in the quiet of their shared glance, they were brothers. Amund looked at him, and for a moment, the fortress of his frame seemed to sag.
"You don't have to do this, Jonas," Amund said, his voice a low rumble that barely reached Jonas's ears over the distant roar of the spectators. "Look at me. Look at the gap between us. There is no victory here for you, only the end of your legacy."
It was an honest assessment. Amund was a titan of flesh and bone, a mirror of their father’s terrifying potency. To the Northmen watching, this wasn't a duel; it was a harvest. Jonas knew that in a clash of raw strength, he would be broken like dry kindling against a cliffside.
"To inherit the throne, we cannot be brothers. If I am to tear the crown from Jotun’s head, I cannot do it as the weaker son," Jonas replied, his voice hardening, shedding the last vestiges of the boy who had once hidden in the shadow of Amund’s strength. He didn't look at the crowd, nor at the towering silhouette of their father.
Amund’s expression shifted. The sadness in his azure eyes didn't vanish, but it was joined by a flicker of grim respect. He straightened his massive spine, his muscles rippling like tectonic plates shifting under a pale sun.
"Then let there be no mercy," Amund spoke, a slow, solemn nod of his head. "May the better man win, Jonas.”
Jotun’s arm descended like a falling monolith, his massive hand signaling the start of the slaughter. He looked up at his brother, and for a fleeting second, the defiance in his eyes was replaced by a hollow, haunting worry. It wasn't merely the daunting physical disparity between himself and the titan that was Amund, nor was it the suffocating presence of his father looming over the arena.
Jonas knew exactly how this fight ended. This wasn't a challenge to be overcome; it was a memory, one he had lived it a thousand times in the corridors of his mind. The more he tried to bury it in the recesses of his memory, the more fiercely it returned, searing itself across his mind’s eye.
Amund moved first, his speed deceptive for a man of such bulk. He closed the distance in three thunderous strides, launching a fist in the blink of an eye. Jonas pivoted into a desperate sidestep, narrowly escaping his brother’s wrath. As he dodged the first lunge, a strange, electric dissonance rippled through him. In his memory, his attempt was in vain and Amund’s fist struck him squarely in the chest, sending him hurtling backward into the dirt.
He was small, timid, and less experienced then but he was no longer inhabiting that fragile shell. He was operating from the present, wearing a body forged by trial and tribulations. He was leaner than Amund, yes, but his muscles were coiled springs of demigod strength, tempered by the essence of Theseus and the raw power of Ingvar. Though Amund was still favored, the gap between him and his brother didn't feel like a canyon.
He had a fighting chance.
Amund lunged again, a massive hand sweeping out to seize Jonas’s throat, but Jonas slid under the reach of the giant’s arm in the nick of time.
Jonas surged forward, graceful yet lethal. He unleashed a rapid barrage of strikes, his fists hammering against the armored wall of Amund’s chest and ribs. Each impact landed with a heavy, sickening thud, yet the giant barely reacted. It was like striking a mountain.
Amund answered with a sweeping hook that tore through the air, missing Jonas’s jaw by mere inches. The force behind the blow was enough to whip Jonas’s head sideways, the displaced air rattling his teeth.
For several minutes, the arena became a brutal dance between speed and overwhelming strength. Jonas slipped and weaved around Amund’s attacks, relying on the supernatural reflexes inherited from Theseus to evade his brother’s crushing grasp. But Amund’s advantage in sheer mass remained relentless.
Then Amund caught him.
His enormous arms locked around Jonas’s torso like bands of iron. With an earth-shaking roar, the giant lifted Jonas completely from the ground and drove him violently into the limestone floor.
The impact blasted the breath from Jonas’s lungs. He lay momentarily stunned, gasping through a cloud of pale dust as the roar of the crowd rose to a fever pitch.
Amund loomed over him, his massive silhouette eclipsing the sun and momentarily stilling the wind. He stepped forward to deliver the final blow, but for a fraction of a second, his guard dropped. It was a flicker of hesitation, a fleeting weakness born from the love he still carried for his brother.
Jonas saw it and he did not waste the opening.
Rather than strike for the head or chest, the demigod drove every ounce of his remaining strength into a single desperate thrust. His fist found the most vulnerable point in Amund’s otherwise flawless defense: his fat testicles.
Jonas’s fist buried itself into the soft, weighted sac, compressing the twin spheres of power against the unyielding wall of Amund's own pelvis.
THWACK!!!
The testicles didn't rupture, but the sheer velocity of the blow warped them! For a moment, the smooth, polished surfaces of the organs were instantly distorted, twisting the delicate internal structures into a knotted, agonized mass before they resumed their anatomical state. Though the testicles regained their shape, the injury to the structures were permanent.
The air left Amund's lungs in a violent wheeze as the giant’s eyes rolled back, the azure depths disappearing into a white haze of agony. His massive frame, which had seemed an immovable mountain only seconds before, buckled. He collapsed forward onto his knees, his hands shielding his vulnerable manhood.
Jonas rolled away, gasping for air, his own hand throbbing from the force of the blow. He watched his brother, this titan of a demigod, brought down to his knees. The crowd, once a roar of bloodthirsty anticipation, had fallen into a stunned, heavy silence. Even Jotun's eyebrow raised in curiosity.
But soon the brothers were back on their feet though slightly slower than before. Amund lunged forward, his massive arms swinging like falling boulders.
But Jonas moved with the deadly grace but strength of a rushing river. The stolen reflexes of Theseus allowing him to slip through the giant’s guard as if he were made of smoke. Once again, he dove low, driving his shoulder into Amund’s hip to off-balance him, and launched a second, more vicious strike directly into the heart of the swelling sack!
THHWWAAACCKKKK!!!
The impact was devastating as it not only compressed the organs but trigger an immediate, violent inflammatory response. Within seconds, Amund’s testicles began to bloat, the skin of the scrotum stretching tight and translucent like a wineskin filling with blood and fluid. They were becoming heavy, engorged orbs of throbbing agony.
Amund’s scream was not a sound of a man, but the roar of a dying beast, an earth-shattering bellow that shook the arena. His massive arms blurred, desperate to shield the throbbing, engorged wreckage of his groin, but he was operating on a delay of pure agony. Jonas was already in motion. He drove his heel straight into his brother's gonads with the concentrated force of a landslide.
The impact was catastrophic. The scrotum, already stretched to a translucent, shimmering thinness by the internal pressure of the engorged tadpole factories, could no longer contain the contents within.
RRIIIIPPPPP!!!!
With the sound of a heavy sail ripping in a gale, the skin split wide across the midline, unable to withstand the violent compression of Jonas's heel. The two fat, purpled gonads ejected from their ruined housing, dangling in the bitter wind.
The two massive spheres of potency now hung exposed, stripped of their protective leather, swaying like bruised fruit on a broken vine. They were no longer the majestic, heavy family jewels of a mighty demigod but grotesque, lumpy mass of meat, glistening in the sun. As they dangled, the cold wind of the North slapped against the exposed membranes, turning the purpled flesh a ghostly, iridescent white. Amund stumbled backward, his massive legs folding beneath him like a collapsing tower. A strained, high-pitched wheeze escaped his lungs, cutting through the arena like a shriek carried on the bitter northern wind.
Jonas did not grant him the mercy of a pause.
Driven by adrenaline and desperation, Jonas surged forward. His focus remained fixed on his brother’s weakened center, unleashing a relentless flurry of strikes. Each impact landed with a brutal, muffled thud, like wet leather hammering against a stone wall.
THWACK! THWACK! THWACK! THWACK! THWACK! THWACK! THWACK! THWACK!
The testicles, already stripped of their protective sac, were flattened, warped, and swelled, turning into a crimson color. Despite the savage battering, the outer membrane held with a stubborn, divine resilience, stretching to the breaking point without rupturing. Yet they the brothers knew that the innards were liquifying to the point of no return.
Jonas could feel the slurry of what used to be seminiferous tubules and seed churn in his brother's tadpole factories with each hit. Finally, he knew it was time to rip out its contents, hollow out the gonads. All it takes now is one more hit.
He drew his fist back, channeling every ounce of Theseus’s stolen vigor into a final, concentrated strike. He aimed for the core of the swelling mass, intending to rupture the organs completely and ending his brother's ability to breed....
But in that heartbeat of absolute focus, Jonas forgot the nature of the monster he was fighting….
